Two Important Books With Early Photographs of Peking and Shanghai

(Association copy).  SHANGHAI OF TODAY: A Souvenir Album of Fifty Vandyke Gravure Prints of "The Model Settlement."   Shanghai: Kelly and Walsh, 1930. 4to. Third edition, revised; originally published in 1927.  12pp of introductory text by F. L. Hawks Pott + 50 tipped in sepia-toned plates with short captions. Original burgundy cloth spine, stiff brown covers. Publisher's yapped edges (over-lapping covers), with edges very slightly bent.  Overall a very clean and sound copy.

Association copy.  Inscribed on the inner front covers in neat calligraphy: "Presented to Mrs. Sutcliffe in appreciation of her work with the Executive Committee of the British Women's Association [of Shanghai] " followed by the signatures of 20 members.  Probably a going-away present.

Donald Mennie and Putnam Weale. THE PAGEANT OF PEKING, Comprising Sixty-six Vandyck Photogravures of Peking and Environs... with an Introduction by Putnam Weale, Shanghai: A.S. Watson & Co., 1920. Folio. 15.25" x 11.5"  [8] + 44pp + [6] plus 66 tipped-in photographic sepia plates. Publisher's blue silk cloth gilt.  Limited to 1,000 copies, this being copy #800. Cover slightly faded.  Pages very clean, crisp copy. Near Fine.

An outstanding depiction of early 20th century Beijing, China. Many of the structures, gates, siheyuan 四合院,  and hutong 胡同 are now gone.
